Mothers' Day

Mother's Day is a day honoring mothers, celebrated on various days in many places around the world. It complements Father's Day, the celebration honoring fathers.

History

Different countries celebrate Mother's Day on various days of the year because the day has a number of different origins.

One school of thought claims this day emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece, which kept a festival to Cybele, a great mother of Greek gods. This festival was held around the Vernal Equinox around Asia Minor and eventually in Rome itself from the Ides of March (15 March) to 18 March.

The ancient Romans also had another holiday, Matronalia, that was dedicated to Juno, though mothers were usually given gifts on this day.

In some countries Mother's Day began not as a celebration for individual mothers but rather for Christians.

Mothering Sunday in Britain and Ireland

Mothering Sunday, also called "Mothers' Day" in the United Kingdom and Ireland falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent (exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday). It is believed to have originated from the 16th century Christian practice of visiting one's mother church annually, which meant that most mothers would be reunited with their children on this day. Most historians believe that young apprentices and young women in servitude were released by their masters that weekend in order to visit their families.[1] As a result of secularization, it is now principally used to celebrate and give thanks for mothers, although it is still recognised in the historical sense by some churches, with attention paid to Mary the mother of Jesus as well as the traditional concept 'Mother Church'.

Mothering Sunday can fall at earliest on March 1st (in years when Easter Day falls on March 22nd) and at latest on April 4th (when Easter Day falls on April 25th).

Father's Day

Fathers' Day is a secular celebration inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and parenting by males, and to honor and commemorate fathers and forefathers. Fathers' Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving to fathers and family-oriented activities.

International history and traditions

Germany

In Germany there is no such thing as Father's Day as celebrated throughout the western world. There are two terms and/or events of an older origin that while similar in name, have entirely different meanings. Männertag, is always celebrated on Ascension Day (the Thursday forty days after Easter), which is a federal holiday. Regionally, it is also called men's day, Männertag, or gentlemen's day, Herrentag. It is tradition to do a males-only hiking tour with one or more smaller wagons, Bollerwagen, pulled by manpower. In the wagons are wine or beer (according to region) and traditional regional food, Hausmannskost, which could be Saumagen, Liverwurst, Blutwurst (Blood Sausage), vegetables, eggs, etc.

Männertag and Herrentag are very much maligned and center around either becoming inebriated and/or passing the tradition of extreme alcohol consumption onto the younger men. Obviously, these holidays/concepts have nothing to do with the traditional concept of Father's Day where the role of Dad is celebrated.

Roman Catholic tradition

In the Roman Catholic tradition, Fathers' Day is celebrated on Saint Joseph's Day, March 19, though in most countries Fathers' Day is a secular celebration.

Siapa pengganti Pak Lah

Dalam blog yang dibuat oleh Khir Toyo ex-MB Selangor dalam blognya berkenaan dengan penganti Pak Lah suatu hari nanti memihak kepada TS Muhyiddin Yassin. Ada 4 calon yang menjadi pilihan. Yang pertama DS Mohd Najib Tun Razak, kedua TS Muhyiddin Yassin, ketiga DS Mohd Ali Rustam dan terakhirnya Tg. Razaliegh Hamzah.


Sehingga berita ini ditulis, Muhyiddin mendapat 1586 undi. Dan amat memeranjatkan lagi Ku Li berada dirangking yang kedua dengan mendapat undi sebanyak 1078.Najib tempat ketiga dan hanya mampu mendapat 426 Undi sahaja. Tempat terakhir Ali Rustam yang memperolehi 115 undi sahaja.

Nampaknya Najib tiada tempat dalam UMNO.Tak boleh nak ganti Pak Lah. Dalam poll yang dibuat itu tidak menjelaskan samada ganti pak lah sebagai PM atau ganti pak lah sebagai presiden UMNO.

Saya agak, ganti itu hanya untuk Presiden UMNO sahaja. Jika nak ganti jadi PM, pada saat itu jawatan PM telah diambil alih oleh Pakatan Rakyat.

Makna simbol rantai Adlin

The ankh (symbol ☥) was the Egyptian hieroglyphic character that read "life". Egyptian gods are often portrayed carrying it by its loop, or bearing one in each hand, arms crossed over their chest. It is also known as the Egyptian Cross, the key of life, the key of the Nile, or as crux ansata, Latin for "cross with a handle".

The precise origin of the symbol remains a mystery to Egyptologists, and no single hypothesis has been widely accepted. E. A. Wallis Budge thought it might have originated as the belt-buckle of the mother goddess Isis, an idea joined by Wolfhart Westendorf with the notion that both the ankh and the knot of Isis were used as ties on ceremonial girdles. Sir Alan Gardiner speculated that it represented a sandal strap, with the loop going around the ankle. The word for sandal strap was also spelled ʿnḫ, although it may have been pronounced differently.

Still other theories include the notion that the ankh represents the sun crowning over the horizon,^[2] the path of the sun from east to west (with the loop representing the Nile), a stylized person, or that it is a combination of the male and female symbols of Osiris (the cross) and Isis (the oval) respectively, and therefore signifies the union of heaven and earth. ^[3]

In their 2004 book "The Quick and the Dead", Andrew H. Gordon and Calvin W. Schwabe speculated that the ankh, djed and was symbols have a biological basis derived from ancient cattle culture (linked to the Egyptian belief that semen was created in the spine), thus:

• the Ankh - symbol of life - thoracic vertebra of a bull (seen in cross section)
• the Djed - symbol of stability - base on sacrum of a bull's spine
• the Was - symbol of power and dominion - a staff featuring the head and tail of the god Set, "great of strength"

Over time, the ankh has come to symbolize life and immortality, the universe, power and life-giving air and water. Its keylike shape has also encouraged the belief it could unlock the gates of death, and it is viewed this way by the modern Rosicrucians and other hermetic orders. The Coptic Christians have used it as a symbol of life after death.^[4]The design for the pin symbolizing membership in Wolf's Head Society, Yale University, sets a wolf's head on an inverted ankh.^[5]

Fakta lawak

FAKTA 1: Puteri Gunung Ledang
Setelah dikajiselidik melalui sebuah perkuburan yang terdapat dipinggir Gunung Ledang, terdapat kesan-kesan peninggalan dan bukti yang menunjukkan mayat di dalam kubur tersebut ialah Puteri Gunung Ledang. Di sebelah bawah badan mayat tersebut terdapat secalik kertas dan setelah diselidik ia sebenarnya Kad Pengenalan Puteri Gunung Ledang. Nama sebenar Puteri Gunung Ledang yang tertera didalam IC itu ialah Tiara Jeaquelina bin Abdullah.


FAKTA 2: Batu Bersurat Terengganu
Mengikut sejarah, ada seorang hamba sultan Terengganu telah dipancung kerana telah melakukan kesalahan. Namun tidak diberitahu apa kesalahannya. Di atas kajiselidik kami, hamba yang dihukum bunuh itu sebenarnya ialah seorang yang bekerja sebagai posmen tetapi tidak mahu menghantar surat-surat baginda kemudian posmen itu melonggokkan surat dirumahnya. Pulis telah menemui 1,290 pucuk batu bersurat di rumah posmen tersebut. Alasan posmen itu ialah macammana dia nak angkat batu-batu bersurat tu naik basikal untuk dihantar ke penerimanya.


FAKTA 3: Keris Taming Sari
Ramai yang mengatakan bahawa keris taming sari telah hilang dan tidak dijumpai sehingga kini. Namun kami telah menemuinya di salah satu kawasan di pendalaman Melaka. Setelah berbulan-bulan mengadakan ekspedisi mencari keris taming sari barulah kami menemui motor Kris yang ditunggang oleh pakcik Taming yang sedang memakai Sari.


FAKTA 4: Bangunan WTC Runtuh di New York
Sebenarnya bangunan ini dapat diselamatkan dari runtuh namun fakta kami sangat jelas kenapa sebenarnya ia runtuh. Persoalan kenapa bangunan ini runtuh terjawab kerana Superman pada masa tu spender dia basah lalu malu untuk dia keluar tanpa spender dia, Batman pula takleh keluar siang sebab kelawar tidur waktu siang. Spiderman pulak hari tu mengalami kincit perut dan terberak-berak kerana tertelan sarang labah-labah. Manakala Kapten Amerika pada hari tu sedang menghadiri majlis penerimaan pangkat sebagai Kapten. Hulk dan wolverine pula tengah menghadiri interview sebagai pelayan hotel dan last sekali catwomen tengah jahit kostumnya yang koyak. Ini semuanya fakta kenapa bangunan tu runtuh kerana superhero amerika mengalami masalah.

Jangan jilat envelop dan stamp

A woman was working in a post office in California.

One day she licked the envelopes and postage stamps instead of using a sponge. That very day the lady found a cut on her tongue. A week later, she noticed an abnormal swelling of her tongue. She went to the doctor, and they found nothing wrong. Her tongue was not sore or anything. A couple of days later, her tongue started to swell more, and it began to get really sore, so sore, that she could not eat. She went back to the hospital, and demanded something be done. The doctor took an x-ray of her tongue and noticed a lump. He prepared her for minor surgery. When the doctor cut her tongue open, a live cockroach crawled out!!!!

There were cockroach eggs on the seal of the envelope. The egg was able to hatch inside of her tongue, because of her saliva. It was warm and moist...

I used to work for a print shop (32 years ago) and we were told NEVER to lick the envelopes. I never understood why until I had to go into storage and pull out 2500 envelopes that were already printed and saw several squads of cockroaches roaming around inside a couple of boxes with eggs everywhere. They eat the glue on the envelopes.
