JOHOR BARU: Four hotel workers were duped into giving photocopies of their MyKad and payslips to a man who claimed to be a credit card agent from a local bank.
The man, who went to their workplace in November, told them that they could apply for a credit card by paying a registration fee of RM200 each. The fee was then reduced to RM50 after further negotiations.
"We were fooled into believing him as it was the first time that we were applying for a credit card and we thought it was a good offer," said Lim Ting Hub, 29.
| Lesson for all: The four victims listening to Tay (background) as he relates their story to newsmen. |
"We called him every day but he would assure us that we would receive it soon.
"After five months, the agent suddenly told us that our application had been rejected," he said.
"The man had told us that our pay of RM2,000 was not a problem as he could arrange for the cards without any conditions," Lim said, adding that they had lodged a police report.
The victims, in their 20s and 30s, were concerned about the photocopies of their MyKad and payslips.
"We do not care about the money or the credit card. What we want now is for the man to return our documents," he said, adding that they feared that it would be misused by the agent.
When contacted, the management of the bank that the man claimed was issuing the credit card declined to comment.
A general enquiry on credit card application at the bank revealed that a person does not have to pay any registration fee. If successful, the applicant would receive the credit card after 15 days.
Meanwhile, Bandar Baru Tampoi MCA chairman Michael Tay said people should be more cautious when approached by people who claimed to be agents of banks.
Langkawi seeks Mahsuris
ALOR STAR: Fifty Malaysians who are named after Langkawi's legendary princess, Mahsuri, will be selected to participate in a programme tagged the "Return of Mahsuri" in May.
Organising chairman Aziz Desa said the event was being held to help promote the Langkawi Geopark, which is vying to be declared as a Unesco National Geopark.
He said those named after the princess should send in applications with photographs and photocopies of their MyKad by the end of this month.
"They must give reasons why they are named Mahsuri," he said.
Aziz said those selected would stay in Kampung Mawat, where the princess whose curse on the island was supposed to last seven generations, used to live.
"We will also take them to Beras Terbakar (burning rice) where according to folklore, the rice mysteriously burned following Mahsuri's execution," he said, adding that the "Mahsuris" would also be taken to Geopark attractions in Langkawi.
According to legend, Mahsuri was executed after she was unjustly accused of adultery some 200 years ago, and was said to have shed white blood.
Applications should be sent to 54, Anjung Pelancungan Desa, Bayas, Mukim Ulu Melaka, 07000 Langkawi, Kedah.
For enquiries, call Aziz at 012-478 3748.

PUTRAJAYA: All government offices will open half-an-hour earlier and close 30 minutes later from June.
However, civil servants will not be required to work longer hours. Instead, they will clock in for work at three different times – from 7.30am till 4.30pm, from 8am till 5pm, and from 8.30am till 5.30pm.
In effect, the offices will be open from 7.30am to 5.30pm.
The timetable is the same for those working in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, except that they will observe Friday and Saturday as the days off.
Public Service Department corporate communications unit chief Hasniah Rashid said the decision to implement the system nationwide was taken after it was found that staggered working hours had contributed to higher productivity among civil servants.
"Civil servants found that they were able to make better use of their time. We also found that longer opening hours for our offices benefited our clients and helped improve the public delivery system," she said.
Currently, government offices in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya open from 7.30am to 5.30pm with a lunch break between 1pm and 2pm. On Fridays, the lunch break is between 12.15pm and 2.45pm.
Staggered working hours from 7.30am to 6.30pm were introduced 10 years ago in departments such as the National Registration and the Immigration Departments, to provide longer hours of service to the public.
About a year later, the working hours were revised to 5.30pm and implemented in government offices in Kuala Lumpur.
Cuepacs welcomed the plan but said the Government should consider problems faced by civil servants.
"For instance, staff whose houses are far from their offices, who have transportation problem or who have to rush their children to school or the babysitter in the morning should not be forced to work at 7.30am. They should be allowed to choose working hours suitable for them. Otherwise, it will be a torture for them," Cuepacs president Omar Osman said.
He also expressed regret that Cuepacs was not briefed so that it could explain the matter to its 850,000 members.
MTUC president Syed Shahir Syed Mohd also said the welfare of civil servants should be taken into consideration.
"The staff should be comfortable with their working hours. If they face problems coming to work on time, the counter service will be affected. We should not compromise the quality of service," he said.
Fomca secretary-general Mohd Shani Abdullah said the Government should create public awareness of the new working hours. It should also consider opening counters during lunch hour, he said.

Undergrads taken on terror ride
By KULDEEP S. JESSY
KAJANG: A man in his 40s stole a factory bus, picked up two university students, robbed them at knifepoint and forced them to strip down to their undergarments by threatening to throw curry powder in their faces.
However, a passing motorist who saw the girls waving for help from inside the bus, alerted police.
When police dashed to the scene five minutes later, the man fled towards a sewage treatment plant and jumped into the pond in a bid to get away.
The two policemen had to jump in as well to nab the man who has a criminal record of sodomy, robbery, blackmail and theft.
| Vehicle in drama: The factory bus that was used to ferry the two students out of the UKM campus where they were robbed at knife-point. |
He is believed to have picked up students and ferried them from one spot to another internally.
Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Rosli Mohd Nizam said that at about 9.30am the man dropped off a female student at a bus stop, picked up two other female students whose lectures had been cancelled and drove them out of the campus instead of to their hostel.
When the first-year law students questioned him, he said that he was new and did not know his way round the campus well.
"However, two kilometres out of campus, the man stopped near a petrol station, held them up at knife-point and robbed them of their cash and valuables.
"He then ordered them to strip and threatened to toss curry powder in their faces if they did not do so," ACP Rosli said here yesterday.
He tied up the terrified students with their clothes, and drove towards the Bangi toll plaza.
About 100m from the toll plaza, he stopped the bus, locked all the doors, got off and started making calls on his mobile phone.
The students, who managed to free themselves, pushed aside the curtains of a window and started waving frantically for help.
A passing motorist saw the frightened faces and alerted the Bandar Baru Bangi police.
ACP Rosli said a knife and a packet of curry powder were recovered. They also found two mobile phones belonging to the students, a laptop, cash and other valuables.
ACP Rosli thanked the motorist who had alerted the police and the policemen who acted quickly to prevent a repeat of the Noor Suzaily Mukhtar case when the computer engineer was raped, sodomised and murdered in a bus in Klang seven years ago.
Tanda 100 hari sebelum hari mati.
Tanda 40 hari sebelum hari mati
mematikan pula.
Sesungguhnya mengingati mati itu adalah bijak
