Langkawi seeks Mahsuris
ALOR STAR: Fifty Malaysians who are named after Langkawi's legendary princess, Mahsuri, will be selected to participate in a programme tagged the "Return of Mahsuri" in May.
Organising chairman Aziz Desa said the event was being held to help promote the Langkawi Geopark, which is vying to be declared as a Unesco National Geopark.
He said those named after the princess should send in applications with photographs and photocopies of their MyKad by the end of this month.
"They must give reasons why they are named Mahsuri," he said.
Aziz said those selected would stay in Kampung Mawat, where the princess whose curse on the island was supposed to last seven generations, used to live.
"We will also take them to Beras Terbakar (burning rice) where according to folklore, the rice mysteriously burned following Mahsuri's execution," he said, adding that the "Mahsuris" would also be taken to Geopark attractions in Langkawi.
According to legend, Mahsuri was executed after she was unjustly accused of adultery some 200 years ago, and was said to have shed white blood.
Applications should be sent to 54, Anjung Pelancungan Desa, Bayas, Mukim Ulu Melaka, 07000 Langkawi, Kedah.
